Culture Movers: DJ Trey Jones from Masvingo to the Big Stage

Born in the quiet mining town of Kwekwe and raised in Masvingo, DJ Trey Jones (real name Trevor John Matsigire) is quickly becoming one of Zimbabwe's top DJs. Known for his ability to ignite any crowd, Trey’s journey into the spotlight is as inspiring as it is impressive. With a humble background and a lifelong passion for music, he has navigated the highs and lows of the industry, now finding himself on the brink of a global breakout.

Trey’s early years were defined by a balance between academics and his musical dreams. After completing both Ordinary and Advanced Level education, he pursued Agricultural Engineering at university, but his heart was always with music. “I used to juggle studies and music,” Trey recalls, “but it was when I graduated in 2010 that I knew I had to go full-time.” And so, Trey made the bold move to turn his passion into a profession, marking the start of a career that would see him perform at some of Zimbabwe’s biggest events.

Despite his rising fame, Trey remains deeply grounded. Married to Emalzer, with whom he shares three children—Caleb, Camilla, and Christian—he is committed to balancing family life with his music. "I’ve always tried to stay humble," he says, reflecting on his journey. And that humility shines through in his performances, where he lets the music do the talking.

Trey is versatile, known for his dynamic DJ sets that blend crowd favorites with innovative beats. He’s performed at state functions, corporate events, weddings, and private parties across Zimbabwe. His resume boasts partnerships with major companies like DSTV, ZESA, Zimplats, and Securico. Whether he's entertaining corporate elites or energizing the crowd at local clubs like Gunners Lime Lounge and Club Cubana, Trey’s ability to connect with his audience is undeniable.

Every artist has a defining moment that takes them from obscurity to the big stage, and for DJ Trey Jones, that moment came in April 2022. While celebrating his birthday on stage, Trey was spotted by the crew from 3KTV, who saw something special in his performance. "One thing led to another," he says, “and soon enough, I was offered the chance to host my own show.” That show, titled “LIT”, airs every Friday on 3KTV, where Trey brings his signature sound and energy to viewers across the country. The opportunity opened new doors and solidified his place as one of Zimbabwe’s premier DJs.

Known as #ThePartyStarter and #TheLion, DJ Trey Jones lives up to his reputation. His shows are not just sets; they are experiences, often featuring live collaborations with drummers—one playing conventional drums and the other on electronic percussion. "The addition of live drummers has taken my performances to the next level," Trey explains. This innovative approach keeps the audience on their toes, never knowing what to expect next.

Trey’s growing popularity isn’t limited to Zimbabwe. He has big plans to take his sound across borders and perform on international stages. "I’m constantly looking to evolve and expand," he says, hinting at upcoming collaborations with internationally renowned DJs.

For anyone looking to book DJ Trey Jones, his track record speaks for itself. He has played at some of Zimbabwe’s most iconic wedding venues, including Wild Geese, Crown Plaza, Rainbow Towers, and The Venue. Whether at an elegant wedding or a laid-back house party, Trey tailors his sets to match the mood and energy of the event, ensuring every occasion is unforgettable.

When it comes to the club scene, Trey’s presence is undeniable. From Cafe Lounge to Habhana Lounge, he has dominated Zimbabwe’s nightlife, bringing crowds to their feet with his infectious energy and perfectly curated playlists. His performances are a mix of Afrobeats, house music, and everything in between, with Trey seamlessly blending genres to keep the party going.
